Overview

We were contracted by Bigwood Roofing to provide a full temporary roof scaffold solution for a residential project in Reading. The works were scheduled during the winter period, requiring a robust, weatherproof structure that would allow roof replacement works to proceed without interruption from the elements. The scaffold was constructed entirely using traditional tube and fitting, showcasing our team’s capability to deliver custom, site-specific solutions using standard materials.

Scope of works

  • Temporary Roof Structure:
Full-span pitched roof to cover the entire property.
  • Perimeter Access Scaffold:
Independent scaffold around all elevations for safe roof access.
  • Weatherproofing:
Metal Sheeted roof and Monoflex plastic sides to protect both the working area and internal parts of the property.
  • Design:
Scaffold designed was outsourced to meet TG20:21 guidelines and project-specific temporary works requirements.

Key challenges

  • Winter Conditions:
The job took place during the colder months, requiring full weather protection to avoid project delays and maintain a dry environment.
  • Residential Setting:
The site offered limited access for materials and equipment, requiring careful logistical planning.
  • Complex Roof Features:
Chimneys, varying roof levels, and fragile roof elements had to be worked around without compromising safety or coverage.

Our Solution

  • Traditional Tube & Fitting Scaffold:
Erected around the property, providing full access to all elevations and gable ends.
  • Pitched Roof Truss Structure:
Constructed from tube and fitting, spanning the building with ridge beams and support bracing.
  • Monarflex Sheeting:
Applied to the roof and upper scaffold levels, ensuring complete weather protection.
  • Secure Ladder Access Towers:
With fully boarded working lifts installed for safe, efficient access.

Health & Safety

  • Full edge protection, handrails, toe boards, and Monoflex installed in line with NASC best practices.
  • Weekly inspections carried out and documented.
  • Scaffold erected and dismantled by CISRS-qualified scaffolders using SG4:22 under supervision

Outcome

The temporary roof scaffold enabled Bigwood Roofing to strip and replace the entire roof without interruption, keeping the property dry and secure throughout the project. The traditional tube and fitting approach offered maximum adaptability to the site’s layout, while maintaining high levels of safety and stability.

“The scaffold was spot on — dry, safe, and exactly what we needed to keep working through some terrible weather. Top job from the lads from start to finish.”
